assignment 5c

Molaa is the Museum Of Latin American Art which is located in Long Beach California. The Knowledge I learned this semester has enhanced my understanding of the artwork found there because now I understand that each piece of artwork is like a small piece of history.

For instance Laura Hernandez is an artist whose work is displayed at the Molaa. She expresses her beliefs of history thru her artwork. She believes that the "universe based on ancient Mayan concepts: the creation of the world with all its creatures, the demons of the dark, and celestial beings from the heavens".

What I see in the artwork is the circle of life. She encompasses everything in her artwork and connects everything in the world together. I saw some of her artwork that is made of paper mache and also watercolor.
My interpretation would be how everything in life is connected to each other. For example fish to water to people and trees taking on human form.
I chose her artwok because once I saw her "man element water" on display at the Molaa it intrigued me to learn more about her artwork.
I think that she is a very talented women who has opened my eyes to observe life in another persons perspective. I think that she is right everything in life is connected to each other.
I know that she is very talented and that her project is so enormous it fills the entire 10,000 foot expansion of the Museum. However, does she have work displayed at any other museums? Does she have any displays close enough to home that I could see them in person? Is there any way that I can view her entire collection online?
you can see her artwork on display at the Molaa by watching the video at:

or you can visit the websites I found:

assignment 5b

For this assignment I chose a simple picture of Camila O'Gorman in which you can see her being blindfolded and carried to her execution. It is a simple black and white drawing. It appears to be hand sketched.
In this piece of artwork I see sadness. It is about being socially acceptable and because she fell in love with the wrong guy she is being punished by loosing her life and the life of her unborn child.
I chose this particular piece of artwok because I could not find alot of art including her. I did find movies but I wanted to choose something that everyone could see. if you would like to know more about a movie that was made about her life you can go to:
http://www.personal.psu.edu/users/s/a/sam50/cinergia/mf/camila.htm#Section%201:%20Pre-screening this was an interesting site that I found which talks about different clips from the movie that was made about her life.

I know that she had eloped with her family priest and she was 8 months pregnant when she was executed.
Why did they consider her baby to be illegitimate when she had run off and eloped?
Why was it not ok for her to be with the man that she fell in love with?
Was it against the law for her to fall in love with a priest?

assignment 5a

"Over the past five hundred years, Latin America has experienced approximately three or four periods of colonization. The first period began with Christopher Columbus's arrival in the Americas in October 1492, launching three centuries of Spanish, Portuguese, and British colonial control over the hemisphere, with the French, Dutch, Danish, and other European powers competing for slices of the action in the Caribbean. In most of Latin America, this period came to an end with the wars of independence from about 1810 to 1825. Political independence ushered in a second period (known as neocolonialism), in which the countries of Latin America were still subject to foreign economic control—this time largely by the British. During the third period, corresponding to the twentieth century, this economic dependency shifted from the British to the United States, and anticolonial responses increasingly assumed anti-imperialistic characteristics. The twenty-first century arguably introduced a fourth period of neocolonialism, in which Latin America has become subject to control through the maquiladora system to transnational capital not necessarily rooted in one country and in which the export commodity is labor rather than raw materials."
http://science.jrank.org/pages/7491/Anticolonialism-in-Latin-America.html

"Miguel Hidalgo led the successful independence movement of Mexico. Simón Bolívar helped in a number of revolutions in northern South America. A wealthy Creole officer, Bolívar impassioned his fellow South Americans to support him in fighting against the Spanish. Between 1817 and 1822, he won a series of victories in Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia. The first uprising against Spanish rule took place in 1809, but only in 1822 did Ecuador fully gain independence and became part of the Federation of Gran Colombia, from which it withdrew in 1830. Luz de America was the nickname given to Ecuador's capital Quito which saw the first revolt against Spanish occupation. The nickname served the urge for the call of independence that was heard around the continent, and inspired the eventual domino collapse of the crown throughout Latin America. The first 3 countries were united in a new nation called Gran Colombia, which broke up in 1830 due to political differences and regional interests. Bolívar rejected all attempts to crown him king of the newly independent areas and worked until his death in 1830 for the cause of independence and republican government. In the Southern Cone of the continent, the fight for independence was led by the Argentine General José de San Martín, who campaigned in Argentina, Chile, and declared Peruvian independence."

I chose to do my research on Camila O'Gorman. I chose her because I am always interested in learning more about the women in our history. Camila O'Gorman lived from 1828 to 1848. She was a wealthy socialite and figure of scandal in 19th century in Argentina. Her execution during the last stages of pregnancy caused an international uproar.

Camila was born in Buenos Aires. She was born into an upper class family of Irish, French, and Spanish descent. Her parents were Adolfo O'Gorman and Joaquina Ximénez Pinto. Camila was considered a pillar of polite society.

Camila was in her late teens when she was introduced to Father Ladislao Gutiérrez, a Jesuit priest who had attended seminary with her brother. He had been assigned as the O'Gorman family's parish priest and was soon being frequently invited to her family's estate. Camile and Ladislao began having an affair. In 1847 they eloped on horseback and ran away to hide.

They were tracked down and arrested by an Irish priest named Fr. Michael Gannon. Camila claimed that it had been she who had initiated the affair and insisted on their elopement, angrily denying rumors that she had been raped.
On the orders of Governor Rosas, Camila O'Gorman and Fr. Gutiérrez were executed by a firing squad on 18 August 1848 in the prison town of Santos Lugares de Rosas. Camila O'Gorman was twenty years old and was eight-months pregnant with the illegitimate child of Father Ladislao Gutiérrez.

Assignment 4c

Culture
Culture can be defined as all the ways of life including arts, beliefs and institutions of a population that are passed down from generation to generation. Culture has been called "the way of life for an entire society".
This fits into our studies because we are studying history and cultures from all over the world. We are researching history and past generations all over the world.
Andrea Balistreri
I learned that "The Inca population lived in the part of South America that extended from the Equator to the pacific Coast of Chile. The Inca empire only lasted not quite 100 years, from 1438AD to about 1532. The highest point in an Inca village was reserved for religious purposes." I noticed that she said the highest point was reserved for religious purposes. I found they used to build their temples high into the heavens. Did this make them feel closer to god?
Emma Lundborg
She also studied the 21 California missions and from her I learned "the Franciscans were able to turn California into a totally different land. It went from being the Native American's land to Spain's land, because the missions had control of the Native Americans and their lifestyle had been changed forever."

Assignment 4b

SUMMERTIME IN SONOMA!!

Observation:
I see my hometown. I see history. I see white buildings and beautiful rolling hills with bright green trees in the background.
Judgement:
I chose this work of art because it is a piece of home to me. I decided to study California missions and what better mission to study than one in my very own home town. I feel comfortable and I enjoy it. I see familiar buildings ones that I can drive 10 minutes or less and see in person right now.

Questioning:
I know that the mission is located in Sonoma but I would like to know when this picture was created. I see familiar buildings on all of the corners surrounding this picture. But I do not see the park located in the foreground. Was this picture created before the park was there?

Assignment 4A

Conquest:
The act or process of conquering.
Something, such as territory, acquired by conquering.
One that has been captivated or overcome: The pianist made a conquest of every audience on the tour.
[Middle English, from Old French, from Vulgar Latin *conquaesīta, feminine past participle of *conquaerere, to conquer. ]
Colonial:
Of, relating to, possessing, or inhabiting a colony or colonies.
often Colonial
a. Of or relating to the 13 British colonies that became the original United States of America.
b. Of or relating to the colonial period in the United States.
often Colonial Of, relating to, or being a style of architecture and furniture prevalent in the American colonies just before and during the Revolution.
Living in, consisting of, or forming a colony: colonial organisms.n.
An inhabitant of a colony.
A house designed in an architectural style reminiscent of the one prevalent in the American colonies just before and during the Revolution.
California Missions
I chose California missions because they are so close to home. I have lived in sonoma all of my life and there is a mission right down town. I actually went there for a field trip as a young child but I do not remember anything about it! I thought it would be interesting to study something that is so close.
The 21st mission was located right here in Sonoma. It was founded on July 4, 1823 by a young padre without the knowledge of his superiors. He was encouraged by the governor, who wanted a buffer between the prosperous Bay Area settlements and the Russians, who had advanced down the California coast as far as Fort Ross. He intended to move everything from Dolores to the new mission but after a debate they decided to keep both missions on their own seperate courses.
The russian fur trader turned out to be very friendly and even shared their supplies and donated the Russian style liberty bells.
The mission ended up serving many years as a church and then it was abandoned. Today the mission and a part of the town square at Sonoma have been restored as a California State Historic Park.

ASSIGNMENT 3C

Classmate Matthew McDonald
Friere found his passion thru his own life experiences. He had many troubles in early life and was able to tearn his life around and try to help others so that they may have a brighter future. He found that teachers could not even read or write and how could they teach others to. He felt literacy was very important. Which it is! In order to truely be a member of society you should have a voice. We have a voice by voting. you must know how to read and write in order to do so.

Classmate Mary Anne He Meier
Friere valued education and wanted to spend his life educated others so they would not have to experience the same life that he did. He lived thru the depression and knew what it was like to be poor, hungry and so on. He also knew what ti was like to be put in prison. He truely wanted to turn the world into a better place. He is a parefect example that one person can make a difference.
Class relevance
I think that friere is very relevant to this class in many ways. I think he is a huge part of the history of Latin america. Also he valued literacy and what would this world be like today if we could not read? How would we vote? We would not even be able to use our computers to take an online course for that matter. He is really an inspriation of how one person can make a difference.

ASSIGNMENT 3B

TITLE
Lost Temples: Mayan Pyramids of Chichen Itza
WEBLINK

HOW I CAME ACROSS THIS PIECE
I actually got this video from our instructor. This was my favorite. When I watched the video I really enjoyed the beauty of it. It is relevant to our studies because it is from Latin America and it is full of culture and art. I think it is really amazing how people used to take such pride in building back then. You do not find the same kind of natural beauty today. I think this artwork is really about history. They took such pride in everything they did. I was fascinated by all of the scriptures and art work on the walls and carved into the rocks. I chose this work of art because it was the only one that really reached out and grabbed me.

QUESTIONS
I know that they built their castle over 100 feet high into the heavens. I wonder why? Did that make them closer to god?
They sacrificed their people into their a well which was their only water supply. I wonder why did they sacrifice innocent people like that?
The castle had exactly 365 steps to the top the same number as there is days of the year. What did they thnk the significance was to that?
They had a large ball field and they would play ball and the looser would then be sacrificed. Why would anyone play if they knew they would die if they lost?

Assignment 3a

PRE-COLOMBIAN
"The pre-Columbian era incorporates all period subdivisions in the history and prehistory of the Americas before the appearance of significant European influences on the American continents." Technically this refers to the era before Christopher Columbus. However, usually it includes the history of American cultures until they were conquered Europeans, even if it happened after Columbus
Why I chose this topic is because when I was watching the video I really enjoyed the art and scriptures all it. I saw it as beautiful.
Three interesting facts about this monument would include:
1. The earliest artifacts were found to date between AD 1 to 250, it is most likely that this place was settled way earlier than that. "Proto-Mayan tribes had inhabited the flat limestone plateau that makes up much of the Yucatan peninsula for at least 8000 years."
2. They used to think the city was occupied several times by various groups of people, beginning with the Maya and ending with Toltec invaders from the city of Tula in central Mexico. After much research they now know that the Maya occupied Chichen Itza continuously.
3. In the famous "Cenote Sagrado" the Maya sacrificed objects and human beings into the cenote as a form of worship to the Maya rain god Chaac.
All cites listed above are credible because the video I chose was given by the instructor, and all of the websites that I researched had information that was very similar to wikipedia.

Something I did not know about Latin America is that according to Wikipedia Latin America includes not only all Spanish and Portuguese speaking countries, but also the current and former French territories in the hemisphere, including Quebec in Canada; Louisiana in the United States!!
I cited all of my sources used above. I believe this is all very reliable information because I chose very reputable websites such as Wikipedia, and the Latin American Information Center.

What do you notice in general.
In general what I noticed is most of my classmates that are taking this class are doing so to fulfill a requirement towards their general education. I also noticed that most of us chose this particular course to fulfill that requirement because we thought it would be interesting.
Choose any two classmates and tell us what you have in common with that classmate
I have noticed that I have the same outlook as Katy she says "it is all about school and her family" and I completely agree with her!

Assignment 1c

Who I have learned from:

I have learned from Jade.

She has always been interested in Humanitiesand is taking this class to fulfill her requirements towards her A.A.
1.In 1946, Freire became the director of the Pernambuco Dept. Of Education and culture of SESI ( The Social Service of Industry)
2.There are many Paulo Freire Institutes around the world but the first was established in 1991 in Sao Paulo.

I have also learned from Adina.

She is taking this class for the same reason as I am. She needed an online class and this was one of the few she had to choose from. However, we are both excited to learn something new.

1.In 1962, Paulo became the director of an adult literacy program, in which he taught 300 adults to read and write in 45 days.

2.As the result of a military overthrow in 1964, Paulo spent five years in jail, later being exiled to Bolivia, and eventually Chile.

Assignment 1b

Until now I had never heard of Paulo Friere. He was a very interesting man. I admire many of his beliefs on education. Particularly how he views teachers and students as a relationship with respect.

Paulo Friere was a Brazilian Educationalist who wrote a book called "Pedagogy of the Oppressed". He was born in 1921 to a middle class family and he lived thru the deppression and became very familiar with poverty and hunger. His Book is currently one of the most quoted books. He had many theoretical innovations which has had a huge impact on the development of education.

He believes that education should be "informal" or "dialogical". He believes in "the essence of education as the practice of freedom". In other words, it is more than the teacher giving a lecture and the student learning from that. He believes that the students and teachers form a relationship and learn to respect one another in order to learn from each other. He feels that it should not involve one person acting on another. Instead, people should work with each other. Learning involves mutual respect and cooperation in order to flurish.

He also rejected the "banking" theory. This theory says that students are like an empty bank and it is the teachers job to fill their accounts. He does not agree with this. He believes that this theory dehumanizes both the teachers and the students. Instead, he believes in the "authentic" approach which is people are incomplete and must be aware of their own incompleteness. Then they may thrive to find their completeness.
